Insect repellent and sunscreen

Chemical or plant-based barrier that keeps biting insects off your skin and sun exposure from burning you during outdoor activities. Essential for any activity where you'll be outside for more than 30 minutes.

What to look for

  1. 1Bug spray with DEET (20-30%) or picaridin (20%) for mosquitoes and ticks—plant-based versions work for 1-2 hours max
  2. 2Sunscreen SPF 30+ that's water-resistant for at least 80 minutes if you'll sweat
  3. 3Combination products sacrifice effectiveness on both fronts—buy separately
  4. 4Small sizes (under 3oz) if you need TSA-compliant travel versions

Skip

  • Wipes and towelettes that don't provide even coverage
  • Aerosol sprays in windy conditions—you lose most of it to the air
  • Expired products—sunscreen loses effectiveness after 2-3 years

Used for: Early morning and dusk outdoor activities when mosquitoes are active · Multi-hour hikes or field observations · Any outdoor activity in direct sun · Dawn and wetland visits during bug season
