Your mission

Card, Walk, Check-In

Play a full loop with your group: draw a card at every stop, complete it during the walk, and show your results at the next check-in. End at a late-night food counter and crown whoever racked up the most points.

Bonus challenge: Run a WILD round at stop three: draw two cards, attempt one, and hand the other to a friend of your choosing.

About This Quest

Gather three to five friends, hand everyone a card they can't trade, and turn the walks between bars into a scored game. Each card is a small dare: talk to a stranger, photograph something odd, do something silly. You report back before the first drink lands.

The walk between venues is usually dead time. Tonight it's the main event. You'll write a deck of challenge cards at home, draw blind at each stop, then race the eight to fifteen minute walk to pull yours off before the group check-in. Nothing on a card costs money and nothing takes more than twenty-five minutes, so even the shyest player in your group gets an easy win early. Want more after-dark side quest ideas for the deck? Steal freely. Then end the night over late food and crown a champion.

Why This Quest Matters

Most nights out blur together because everyone stands in the same spot saying the same things. Give the group a shared mission and something flips: people get braver, funnier, more generous with each other. The best stories of the year usually start with someone reading a card out loud and saying, "okay, I'll try it."

What You'll Experience

  • Draw blind: Flip a card you can't trade and find out what the night wants from you.
  • Beat the walk: Pull off your dare in the eight to fifteen minutes between stops.
  • Run the check-in: Report results and show your proof photo before anyone touches a drink.
  • Crown a champion: Tally points over late-night food and let the winner pick next time's route.

Before You Begin

Twenty minutes at the kitchen table is all the prep this needs. Essentials: a pack of 3x5 index cards (heavy 180gsm stock so the marker doesn't bleed through), a permanent marker, a hole punch and a small key ring, plus a transit app with offline maps downloaded before you leave. Handy extras: a keychain flashlight for reading cards on dark sidewalks, a clip-on wide-angle phone lens for tight stairwells and booths, and a couple of dice to settle ties. Plan three or four stops with eight to fifteen minute walks between them.

Safety Tips

  • Only write cards for places you're allowed to be: lobbies, mezzanines, public stairwells, and rooftops where staff say yes. Never propped doors, fenced areas or employee-only zones.
  • If a guard or staff member says no, the card is an automatic fail with no penalty. Thank them and walk away immediately.
  • Ask before photographing any person, and if they decline the card doesn't count. Never photograph children, and never shoot through windows into homes.
  • Nobody completes a card alone after dark. Any card that pulls players off the main route is done in pairs.
  • Step fully out of the roadway before you frame a photo, keep your flashlight on low and aimed at the ground, and never point the beam at faces or drivers.
  • Tell someone outside the group your stops and roughly when you'll finish, and watch last-train times in your transit app as the night goes.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Build The Deck

20 min

This part is weirdly fun on its own. Write twelve to sixteen cards, one dare per card, mixing three types: OBSERVE (find and photograph something), DO (a small physical action) and SOCIAL (talk to a stranger). Score each in the corner: OBSERVE 1 point, DO 2, SOCIAL 3, plus a bonus point for a proof photo. Punch a hole in each and thread them onto the ring.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Use a different card color for each type so people can see at a glance how brave the night is about to get.
2

Round Up Your Crew

15 min

Three to five friends is the sweet spot; fewer feels thin, more gets hard to wrangle. Text the rules ahead so nobody arrives confused: draw blind, complete on the walk, report at the next stop. Map a route with three or four venues and eight to fifteen minute walks, download offline maps, charge the keychain light, and pocket the deck and dice.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Store the flashlight's magnetic cap attached to the body, or it switches itself on in your bag and arrives dead.
3

First Draw, No Trading

25 min

At stop one, fan the cards face down and let everyone pull one. No trading on the first round, no peeking at each other's. Read yours silently, keep the grin off your face, and finish your drink. The clock starts when you all stand up to leave, because the walk to stop two is your window.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Whoever draws the scariest SOCIAL card first sets the tone for everyone. Cheer loudly when they pull it off.
4

The Check-In

20 min

Here's the ritual that makes the whole game work: at the next venue, nobody drinks until everyone has reported. Go around the group, say what your card asked, say whether you got it, and show the proof photo. Tally points out loud. Failed cards go to the bottom of the deck and that player draws a replacement. Then draw fresh for the next walk.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Four minutes is plenty for the check-in. Keep it quick and punchy so the storytelling happens on the walk, not at the table.
5

The WILD Round

20 min

Stop three, when everyone's loose and laughing, is when you break out the best twist. Each player draws two cards, attempts one, and assigns the other to whoever they like. Expect immediate chaos and very targeted revenge. This walk is usually where the night's best story comes from, so take photos of the attempt, not just the result.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Roll a die on the walk, and if anyone gets a 6, the whole group has to attempt the same card together.
6

Scores Over Late Food

45 min

End somewhere open late with a counter and good cheap food: a diner, a taqueria, a dumpling place. Add up every card, re-tell the ones that went sideways, and roll the dice to break any tie. The winner picks the route next time. Drop all the proof photos in a shared album while everyone's still at the table.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Pull out any card nobody has attempted after three nights out. If it scares everyone, it isn't a dare, it's a dead card.

You turned four walks and a pile of index cards into the night your group will keep bringing up. Hand the deck to the champion and let them plan the rematch route.
