About This Quest

Grab a friend and a bag, head out on a winter walk, and collect fallen branches and cuttings you have permission to take. Then build a front-door wreath together on a wire frame. Your hands will smell like pine for hours, in the best way.

Cold air, crunchy paths and a cloth bag slowly filling with green: pine, cedar, a sprig of holly, maybe a pinecone or two. You come home with your cheeks pink and your pockets full. At the table, you'll bundle the greenery and wire it onto a round frame, one little bunch at a time. If you can tie a twist tie, you can do this. Your mission is to give your wreath a name and hang it where everyone sees it.

Why This Quest Matters

There's a special kind of pride in walking past your own front door and seeing something you made from a walk you took. It isn't from a store. It's from a branch you spotted, a cedar you crouched to smell and an afternoon with a friend. Every time the door opens, you'll get a little whiff of that walk.

What You'll Experience

  • Hunt for green treasure: Spot fallen branches, cones and berries hiding along a winter path.
  • Smell the season: Crush a needle and breathe in pine, cedar or fir.
  • Build something round and lovely: Watch loose bunches turn into a full, bushy ring.
  • Hang your handiwork: Step back and admire your own wreath on the front door.

Before You Begin

Good news: your walk is the shopping trip. Essential: a 12–14 inch wire wreath frame, a spool of green florist wire, small garden pruners, a big cloth bag or basket, and warm gloves. Handy extras: a wide ribbon for a bow, to make it feel finished; a spray bottle of water, to keep greens fresh overnight; and an old sheet to catch needles. Only take fallen branches, trimmings from your own yard, or cuttings someone has said yes to. Parks and nature reserves often don't allow cutting, so check first.

Safety Tips

A good quest stays a good story. These are general notes; your gear's manual, the venue's rules and local law come first.

  • Only gather where it's allowed: your yard, a friend's yard with their yes, or land whose rules permit it. Many parks ban cutting live plants.
  • Point pruners away from your body and fingers, and close them when you're walking. An adult handles them for younger kids.
  • Holly and yew berries are poisonous. Keep berries away from small kids and pets, and wash hands after handling.
  • Florist wire ends are sharp. Tuck every end into the greenery and wear gloves if your skin is sensitive to sap.
  • Dress for the cold and turn back before dark if the path is icy.
  • The pruner blade is very sharp. Close the pruners and keep them in the bag whenever you're walking, and pass them to your partner handle first.
  • Wear the thorn-resistant leather gloves while you gather and handle holly or prickly greens, so pokes and sap stay off your hands.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Pick Your Path

10 min

Where are the evergreens hiding? Choose a walk past pines, cedars or firs: your own yard, a friend's hedge, or a trail where gathering is allowed. Pack the bag, pruners and gloves, and bundle up. Give your walking partner one job: spotter. They point, you check that it's fallen or permitted, then you gather it.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Ask before you snip anything that isn't yours. A friend with a big hedge is usually happy to share.
2

The Green Treasure Hunt

45 min

Now the fun starts. Collect sprigs about 6–10 inches long, with lots of needles and few bare stems. Your Felco pruners slice cleanly through stems up to 1 inch thick, so even a chunky pine tip snips off with one easy squeeze. Mix textures: soft cedar, bushy pine, flat fir and a few cones or bare twigs for fun. Crush a needle and smell it. Which one smells best? Fill your bag until it's stuffed, since a wreath eats more greenery than you'd guess.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Cut from the bottom and back of a branch so the plant still looks full.
3

Bundle Up the Greens

20 min

Back inside, spread an old sheet on the table and dump out your haul. Sort it into piles by type. Then make little bunches of three or four sprigs, mixing types in each one, with the stems lined up. You want about 20 to 25 bunches. It's like making tiny bouquets, and nobody is checking if they're perfect.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Snip about 8 inches of wire for each bunch ahead of time so your hands stay free.
4

Wire It Round

40 min

Here comes the magic part. Lay a bunch on the frame, wrap the stems tightly with wire two or three times, then lay the next bunch on top so its leafy end hides the last one's stems. The green paddle wire comes on a flat spool that won't tangle, and its green color melts right into the needles, so any wire that peeks out just disappears. Keep going, all in the same direction, round and round. Halfway there, hold it up. See it filling out?

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Don't cut the wire between bunches. Just keep wrapping from the same spool until you get all the way around.
5

Name It and Unveil It

20 min

Your wreath needs a big finish. Tuck in cones, a holly sprig or each person's secret item, then tie on a ribbon bow. Keep your leather gloves on for the holly, since they're made to stand up to thorns and prickly leaves. Now give it a name, the grander the better. Hang it on the door, call everyone outside, and reveal it with a drumroll. Then let the secret-item hunt begin.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Hang it on a door hook or a loop of wire. Avoid nails in doors you don't own.

You turned a winter walk into a wreath that greets everyone at your door. Now challenge your walking partner to make one for their own door next weekend.
