Your mission

The First Telling Reveal

Find the oldest newspaper article about your chosen ghost story, then read it aloud to your crew at the spot at dusk. Before you read, everyone guesses one detail the original will leave out.

Bonus challenge: Give your ghost a silly nickname based on what the first article really said, and award it to the friend whose guess was closest.

About This Quest

Grab a friend and pick a ghost story people in your town still whisper about. Then play detective at the library and hunt down the very first time a newspaper printed it. The best part comes at dusk: you read that old article out loud, right where it happened.

Somewhere in your town there's a story everyone half-knows: the lady on the bridge, the lights in the old mill, the footsteps on the inn stairs. But who told it first, and what did they actually say? You'll pick one legend, follow its trail through old newspapers at the library, then stand on the spot as the sky goes dim. Librarians love this kind of question, so you won't be hunting alone. Then comes the big reveal.

Why This Quest Matters

Ghost stories grow every time someone retells them. A headless rider might start life as a short note about a strange noise on a farm road. Finding that first version feels like catching the story in its pajamas. And reading it aloud where it happened, as the light fades, gives everyone goosebumps you'll be laughing about all week.

What You'll Experience

  • Pick your phantom: Choose the local legend that has always given you the best chills.
  • Crack the case: Feel the thrill when the oldest article finally pops up on the screen.
  • Spot the changes: Gasp at how much the story grew between then and now.
  • Read it at dusk: Share the original words aloud while the shadows get long.

Before You Begin

Good news: the hardest part of detective work is picking which ghost to chase. Essentials: a library card, the name of one local ghost story, and a rough idea of where it happened. Call or check your library's website to ask which old newspapers they keep, either on microfilm (tiny photos of old pages on film reels) or online. Handy extras: a flashlight for the walk back, a USB flash drive to save archive pages, and a warm drink for the dusk visit. Make sure the spot is public and open at dusk.

Safety Tips

  • Visit only public places that are open at dusk. Cemeteries, parks and old buildings often post closing times, and going past a fence or a No Trespassing sign is against the law.
  • Stay out of abandoned buildings and off old bridges or railroad tracks, however spooky they look.
  • Bring a flashlight and watch your footing on uneven ground as the light fades.
  • Wear something bright if you walk along a road, and stay well off the traffic lanes.
  • Go with at least one friend, and tell someone else where you're headed. Teens bring an adult.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Choose Your Ghost

20 min

Which story gives you the best shivers? Ask friends, family or a local history page for town legends, then pick one with a real place attached, like a bridge, a crossroads or an old hotel. Jot nothing down yet. Just agree on the ghost and the spot together.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Pick a story with a name or a year in it. Those clues make the newspaper hunt much faster.
2

Meet Your Librarian

30 min

Time to open the case files. Head to the library's reference or local history desk and tell them which ghost you're chasing. Ask which old local papers they have and how to search them. Librarians often know the town legends already and may point you to the perfect reel or database.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Ask whether the library has a local history clippings file. Someone may have saved the article for you years ago.
3

The Great Archive Hunt

60 min

Now the real detective work starts. Search the place name with words like ghost, haunted, strange or apparition, and go back one decade at a time. When you spot a mention, keep going earlier until the trail stops. That oldest article is your treasure. Save it to a little USB flash drive that plugs into a library computer at one end and a phone at the other, then print a copy too.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Ask the librarian before plugging a flash drive into a library computer, since some machines only allow printing or emailing.
4

Then Versus Now

15 min

Here's the twist. Before anyone reads the full article, each person guesses one spooky detail from today's version that the original will leave out. Maybe the ghost had no name back then, or the scream was really just a bell. Keep your guesses secret until the dusk visit.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Grab a quick snack now. Detective work makes people hungry, and dusk waits for no one.
5

Dusk at the Spot

40 min

This is the moment. Arrive about fifteen minutes before sunset and stand where the story says it happened. Bring a warm treat, like cocoa or soup in an insulated food jar that keeps it hot for up to seven hours. Once the light starts to fade, say your guesses out loud, then read the original article in your best storyteller voice. Who guessed right? Did the place feel different once you heard the real words?

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Check the sunset time for your town that morning so you reach the spot right on cue.
6

Close the Case

15 min

Case solved, detectives. Before you head home, award the ghost its new nickname and crown the best guesser. Walk back with your flashlight on, swapping theories about how the story grew so wild. Glance at its little battery screen before you leave the house so you know it's charged for the walk back. Hand the printed article to whoever loves the legend most.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Drop the library a thank-you note about your find. They love hearing their archive helped solve a mystery.

You traced a town legend back to its very first telling and read it where it all began. Now challenge a friend to pick a different ghost and race you to its first headline.
