Aim to deliver the week before Thanksgiving. Schools often close for the holiday, so get your teacher's letter in early.

About This Quest

Before Thanksgiving, you'll write three thank-you letters and deliver every one by hand. One goes to a teacher, one to a stranger who once helped you, and one to someone you drifted away from. Bring a friend to write alongside you, then watch someone's face light up on their doorstep.

Think of the teacher who believed in you, the stranger who helped you on a hard day, and the old friend you still think about. They probably have no idea how much they mattered. This week, you get to tell them. You'll pick your three people, write short, honest letters over cocoa with a friend, and hand them over in person. Three or four warm sentences is plenty. Then comes the best part: the deliveries.

Why This Quest Matters

A thank-you you say out loud is lovely. One you can hold, reread and stick on the fridge stays with someone for years. Showing up in person feels a little scary, and that's exactly why it means so much. You get to tell someone they made a difference, and you get to see them hear it.

What You'll Experience

  • Remember who shaped you: Spend an evening thinking about the people who quietly changed your path.
  • Write words that land: Tell someone exactly what they did and why it still matters to you.
  • Find a kind stranger: Play detective and work out where to leave a thank-you for someone you met once.
  • See the smile: Hand over a letter and watch someone realize they made a difference.

Before You Begin

You don't need to be a great writer, just an honest one. Essential: a pack of blank note cards or nice stationery, matching envelopes, and a pen that writes smoothly. Handy extras: a scrap pad for rough drafts so your card stays tidy, a small treat like cookies to tuck in with a letter, and a friend to write alongside you so it feels like an evening, not a chore. Before you visit a school, call the front office and ask how to drop off a letter for a teacher.

Safety Tips

  • Schools have visitor rules: sign in at the front office, or leave your letter there instead of walking in.
  • Leave the stranger's letter at a public place, like the shop, café, library or office where you met, not at a private home you had to search out.
  • Kids and teens should make deliveries with a parent or trusted adult, and tell someone where they're going.
  • If an old friend hasn't stayed in contact, a letter at the door or in the mailbox is kinder than a surprise visit. Let them reach back if they want to.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Pick Your Three People

20 min

Who changed something for you? Make a cozy spot, grab a stack of plain 3x5 index cards, and give each person their very own card. They're blank on both sides, so you have lots of room to scribble. Choose one teacher, one stranger who helped you once, and one person you lost touch with. On each card, jot a single moment you remember, like the comment on your essay, the jump start in the rain, or the sleepover laughs. That moment becomes the heart of your letter.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Pick a specific moment over a big feeling. Details are what make someone tear up.
2

Host a Letter Night

60 min

Time to write, and it's better with company. Invite a friend over, put on music, make cocoa and write side by side. Keep each letter short: say what they did, how it helped, and where you are now because of it. Draft on scrap paper first, then copy it neatly onto the card. The 0.38mm gel pen is the best one in the set for letters. It writes small and clear and won't soak through to the other side, so your neat copy stays neat. Read your favorite lines out loud to each other.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Start with "You probably don't remember this, but..." and the rest will flow.
3

Track Down Your Stranger

30 min

Here's the detective twist. You may not know your stranger's name, and that's fine. Think about where you met them: a bus route, a pharmacy, a hospital ward, a coffee shop. Call or stop by and ask whether you can leave a card for the person who helped you. Tuck it into one of the frosted envelopes from the wax seal kit, then press a little heart seal on the back so it feels like a real treasure. Use the gold or silver marker to write a short description on the front, like "For the driver of the 14 bus, November 2021."

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Staff love passing these along, so mention why you're asking and they'll often help you find the right person.
4

Make Your Deliveries

90 min

Deep breath. You've got this. Plan a route so you can deliver all three over a day or two. Drop the teacher's letter at the school office, leave the stranger's card where you met, and take the old friend's letter to their door. For at least one, hand it over in person and stay while they open it. That pause while they read is the moment you came for.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Feeling nervous? Have your buddy wait in the car and give you a thumbs-up for courage.
5

Celebrate Your Hat Trick

15 min

All three letters delivered. That deserves a treat. Meet up with your writing buddy over pie or hot drinks and swap stories. Who smiled? Who cried? Did anyone write back? Share the best reaction you saw and give each other a goofy award, like the Bravest Doorbell Ring.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • If your old friend replies, say yes to coffee. The letter was just the first hello.

You told three people they mattered, and you said it in person. Now hand a blank card to a friend and dare them to deliver their own three before Thanksgiving.
