Merino wool base layer
Thin wool underlayer worn next to skin that regulates temperature during low-intensity outdoor activity. Keeps you warm when still, sheds heat when moving, and doesn't stink after hours of wear.
What to look for
- 1100% merino wool or high-percentage blend (not synthetic)
- 2Midweight (200–250 g/m²) for cold weather; lightweight (150–180 g/m²) for mild
- 3Snug fit so it layers invisibly under regular clothes
- 4Flat seams to prevent chafing during extended wear
Skip
- Cotton underlayers that trap sweat and make you clammy
- Cheap wool blends that itch and defeat the purpose
Used for: staying warm during slow walking or sitting exercises · regulating temperature across morning-to-afternoon sessions · wearing under street clothes for inconspicuous outdoor practice
