Woodworking chisels

Beveled steel blades for removing wood precisely by hand. Sharp chisels teach you proper cutting technique and grain direction; dull ones just teach you to force things.

What to look for

  1. 1Start with 3–4 sizes: 1/4", 1/2", 3/4", 1" covers most beginner work
  2. 2Hardened steel that holds an edge (look for Rc 58+ hardness ratings)
  3. 3Handles designed to be struck with a mallet, not just hand pressure
  4. 4Flat backs (not hollow-ground) so you can actually sharpen them
