Make it in late November so it's hanging by December 1. It works just as well as a 24-day countdown to a birthday, a trip or a homecoming.

About This Quest

Make an advent countdown for someone you love, filled with dares instead of chocolate. Write 24 five-minute real-world challenges, tuck each into a numbered envelope and string them on a line by their door. Every morning they open one and do something small and fun, like waving at a stranger's dog.

Picture your favorite person stepping out their door and finding a row of little envelopes waiting for them, each with a number and their name. Every day of the countdown, they get a fresh surprise you dreamed up just for them. You'll brainstorm dares that fit their life, write each one like a tiny love note, decorate the envelopes and hang the whole line. If you can write a birthday card, you can do this. Then it's time to hang it up for the big reveal.

Why This Quest Matters

When someone you love opens an envelope and finds a dare you wrote for them, they feel thought about. It might be a silly walk to the mailbox or a dare to call their grandma. Each one says you know them and want their day to be brighter. Chocolate disappears in a second, but a dare from you gets talked about all week.

What You'll Experience

  • Dream up dares just for them: Fill a list with small challenges that only make sense for your person.
  • Write tiny love notes: Turn each dare into a cheerful message they'll want to keep.
  • Build a doorway surprise: Watch a plain stretch of wall become a line of numbered envelopes.
  • See them light up: Catch their face the first time they spot the line by their door.

Before You Begin

If you can write a grocery list, you can write a dare. Essential: 24 small envelopes, 24 notecards or slips of paper that fit inside, a few feet of jute twine, 24 mini clothespins and a pen or marker. Handy extras: stickers or washi tape so each envelope looks like a present, removable wall hooks to hold the twine without marking the wall, and a gold pen that makes the numbers easy to spot. If they live in an apartment, check that the building allows decorations by the door.

Safety Tips

  • Keep every dare safe, legal and kind. Skip anything involving traffic, heights, strangers' homes or pressure to spend money.
  • Hang the line flat against the wall beside the door, never across a walkway or doorway where someone could trip or catch it.
  • Follow the hook maker's instructions for weight and removal, and check building or landlord rules before decorating a shared hallway.
  • Keep mini clothespins and small decorations away from toddlers and pets, since they can be a choking hazard.

Step-by-Step Guide

1

Dream Up Your Dares

30 min

Start with the fun part: what would make your person grin? Think about their mornings, their street and the people they love. Brainstorm way more ideas than you need, like humming a song on the stairs, texting a friend a compliment, finding something red outside or dancing during the kettle boil. Every dare should take about five minutes. Circle your 24 favorites.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Keep a running list on your phone for a few days. The best ideas pop up while you're brushing your teeth.
2

Write Them Like Love Notes

30 min

Now give each dare its voice. Write one per card, starting with their name or a nickname, and add a line about why you picked it. 'Go find the tallest tree on your block. You always notice the good stuff.' The kraft coin envelopes are tiny, about 2¼ by 3½ inches, so cut your cards a little smaller than that and fold them once. A pack has 100 envelopes, so a smudged one is no big deal. Grab a fresh one! Keep each card short and easy to read before coffee, then slide it in.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • To seal, dab the flap with a little water, press it shut and hold it for about a minute.
  • • Leave a few unsealed so you can swap in a new dare if a better idea shows up.
3

Number and Dress Them Up

20 min

Time to make them look like presents. Write a big, clear number on the front of each envelope, 1 through 24, so they can find today's in a second. Then decorate with stickers, doodles or tape in their favorite colors. Invite a kid or a friend to help with this part. The messier the doodles, the more charming the line looks.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Do the numbers first in thick marker, then doodle around them so they stay easy to spot.
4

Plant a Few Surprises

15 min

Here's the twist that makes them gasp. Pick three or four envelopes and turn them into dares you'll do together, like a five-minute walk to look at lights or a hot cocoa toast on the doorstep. For these special days, write on one of the wildlife notecards. Each has a glossy animal photo on the front and a smooth blank inside, so it feels extra fancy. At 4 by 5 inches it won't fit in the tiny envelope, so clip it right beside that day's envelope instead. Mark them with a tiny star so they know you're coming. Now the countdown has days they'll really look forward to.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Space the starred days out, maybe one each week, so there's always a together day coming up.
5

Hang the Dare Line

15 min

This is the big reveal. Stick a removable hook on each side of the wall beside their door and stretch the twine flat between them. Clip the envelopes in order, number one closest to where they'll reach first. The mini clothespins grip hard and open about ¾ of an inch, so they hold an envelope and a starred notecard together without a wobble. Then be there when they find it, or hide nearby. Hand them envelope one and watch them read their very first dare.

💡 Pro Tips:

  • • Wipe the wall spots with rubbing alcohol and let them dry before you stick the hooks on. They'll grab much better.
  • • If the twine sags in the middle, add one more clip halfway along.

You just turned a plain bit of wall into a month of small surprises for someone you love. Now dare them to make a line for you next year.
